Ranabir Dey

Ranabir is the leader of the S2M Group. Ranabir did his undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He completed his graduate studies (M.S. and Ph.D.) from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. Subsequently, he joined the Physics of Complex Fluids group at the University of Twente in the Netherlands as a post-doctoral fellow (2016-2018). Prior to joining IITH in December 2020, Ranabir was a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Complex Fluids at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-organization in Goettingen, Germany (2019-2020).

Ranabir is an avid reader, and a self-proclaimed cinephile. He likes to believe that if he had not been in academia, he would have definitely tried his luck at being a writer-director. One day, he hopes to write a treatise on the similarities between designing, executing, and communicating a scientific research work and directing a cinema. He is also a fitness enthusiast and likes to run and bike.

PhD Candidates

Smita S. Sontakke

Smita is a Prime Minister’s Research Fellow in S2M group. Smita completed her undergraduate studies (B.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering from Walchand College of Engineering, Sangli. She completed her masters (M.Tech) from Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur with a specialization in Thermofluids Engineering. In S2M, her research focuses on the near-wall swimming and collective behaviour of self-propelling microswimmers near deformable interfaces, considering active droplets as a model system.

Besides doing research, Smita enjoys playing volleyball; she represented IIT Jodhpur in inter-IIT sports events. Smita also enjoys watching web shows and playing cricket. She has recently developed an interest in canvas painting.

Subhasish Guchhait

Subhasish is a Prime Minister’s Research Fellow in S2M group. Subhasish completed his undergraduate studies (B.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering from College of Engineering & Management, Kolaghat . He completed his masters (M.Tech) from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur in the Applied Mechanics stream with a specialization in fluid mechanics. In S2M, his research focuses on the swimming dynamics of self-propelling microswimmers near complex interfaces.

Besides doing research, Subhasish likes to play cricket, travel, and paint. He is also interested in photography. Subhasish likes to go on long road trips.

Arvind Kumar

Arvind is the first PhD candidate of the group associated with the Interdisciplinary (ID) PhD program of IIT Hyderabad. He is co-advised by Dr. Anupam Gupta from the Department of Physics.

Master's Students

Aneesha Kajampady

Aneesha completed his undergraduate studies (B.E) in Mechanical Engineering from Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, Bengaluru. He has joined the group as a research assistant. Aneesha will be investigating the rheotactic dynamics of microswimmers in narrow confinements.

Apart from academics, Aneesha is interested in astronomy , sci-fi novels, series and films, classical music, video games, and of course food.

Harshit Ishwar Patel

Harshit completed his B.Tech. from the University of Mumbai. In S2M he aims to study the clustering behaviour of self-propelled swimmers in different microconfinements.

Apart from the research, he is also interested in cooking, calisthenics, badminton,sci-fi movies.
